Welcome to the 4th annual Magical Trash Year-in-Review, where we take a look at the trash cans we both gained and lost, as well as discuss a few trends spotted at Disney theme parks and resorts. (View previous Year-in-Reviews) This year's additions were primarily driven by attraction openings, including Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at Epcot, the opening of Avengers Campus at the Walt Disney Studios in Paris, and the arrival of the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. We also rejoiced at the return of the Electric Umbrella's Talking Trash Can - redressed and now located at the Odyssey with the same audio script in Epcot. Over the past year, over 104 new entries were added to MagicalTrash.com, complimented by 1,800+ posts across social media networks, including Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn - and added in November, Mastodon. For 2022, Magical Trash tracked 13 substantial trash can design changes, a 7% decrease vs. 2021's 14 tracked changes:
Added: 11
Historical Cans Added: 3
Updated: 1
Endangered: 0
Removed: 1
The US-based parks saw the most activity, with Walt Disney World recording 8 changes and Disneyland Resort saw 1 change. Disneyland Paris Resort recorded 2 updates, while the Disney Cruise Line saw 1 update. No notable changes were recorded for Tokyo Disney Resort, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, or Shanghai Disney Resort Here's a detailed breakdown of updates: ADDED New trash can designs that debuted in Disney theme parks over the past year
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (Xandar) - NEW Walt Disney World, Epcot, World Discovery For the Xandar part of the story, red-accented design cues adorn the base silver can, including a wrap-over on the top.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (Terra/Earth) - NEW Walt Disney World, Epcot, World Discovery For the Earth-based portion of the ride, base silver trash cans feature references to “Please Keep Terra Clean” along with multi-language symbols via purple decals. On the trash can, the symbols translate to “SCRAP,” while the recycling symbols are interpreted as “REUSE.”
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (Unload) - NEW Walt Disney World, Epcot, World Discovery Open-top, Silver cylindrical trash cans anchor the unload area makes it more ideal for handling... protein spills.
Avengers Campus - Paris (Shockwave) - NEW Disneyland Paris Resort, Walt Disney Studios, Avengers Campus Used a primary design throughout the land, silver cans feature a “shockwave” graphical pattern on the sides and unthemed inlet flap.
Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure - NEW Disneyland Paris Resort, Walt Disney Studios, Avengers Campus The Paris Avengers Campus version of DCA's WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure sports cans with the logo of WEB, the Worldwide Engineering Brigade. Leveraging a silver base color, the cans are blank on the front and back, while the sides feature a repeating pattern of dark gray WEB logos in various sizes that contrast the can color, creating a subtle monochromatic look.
Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser (Interior) - NEW Walt Disney World, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Onboard the 100-cabin Corellian MPO-1400 model Galactic Starcruiser, you'll voyage to the far reaches of the galaxy with legendary in-wall trash & recycling. No Aurebesh to be found.
Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser (Terminal) - NEW Walt Disney World, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Before you board a launch pod to make your way to the MPO-1400 Star Cruiser Halcyon, you’ll want to dispose of your garbage in these cans found in the Galactic Starcruiser Terminal.
Connections Café and Eatery - NEW Walt Disney World, Epcot, World Celebration Trash can cabinets offer a station of disposal options for trash, recycling, trays, utensils, and dishes. Lettering utilizes the updated World Bold font that has been part of Epcot's reimagining.
Toy Story Land - NEW Walt Disney World, Disney's Hollywood Studios New can design uses 3 primary colors - blue, green, and yellow - and moves away from the standard LEGO-like block pattern to one that emphasizes diagonals.
Hungry Bear Restaurant - NEW Disneyland, Critter Country, Hungry Bear Restaurant In 2021, Disneyland started piloting the use of food waste trash cans in Tomorrowland and expanded their use in 2022 to Critter Country.
Disney Wish - NEW Disney Wish, Disney Cruise Line A combination trash, recycling, and food waste receptacle, this faux wood cabinet with a rather casual font choice doesn't exactly exude “premium experience.”
HISTORICAL CANS ADDED Retro trash can designs that were unearthed by new research this year, but are no longer in use
Toy Story Playland (Date Unknown) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Disneyland Paris Resort, Walt Disney Studios, Toy Story Playland The original version of the trash bins designed for Toy Story Playland followed a non-standard design that was heavily boxy. Approved for production, but later rejected for theme park use.
Critter Country Rustic Cans (1997) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Disneyland, Critter Country Rustic-looking trash can along the path between Critter Country and New Orleans Square. Featured a unique recycling logo with a red & white color scheme.
Wonders of Life (2006) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Walt Disney World, Epcot, Future World For much of its life, there was a strong 1990s aesthetic represented on the trash cans in the Wonders of Life pavilion.
UPDATED Existing trash can designs that have been modified or revised in the past year
Electric Umbrella Talking Trash Can - UPDATED Walt Disney World, Epcot, World Discvoery Returning 3 years after the closure of the Electric Umbrella restaurant in Future World, the Talking Trash Can has a new home and look in Epcot's Odyssey - but the same snarky commentary remains.
ENDANGERED Trash can designs that still exist, but will most likely disappear in the future
None for 2022
REMOVED Trash can designs that have been eliminated from use at Disney theme parks
Future World Silver & Purple Cans - REMOVED Walt Disney World, Epcot, Future World With the reimagining of Epcot's Future World into the World Discovery, World Celebration, and World Nature neighborhoods - with matching trash cans, the standard silver Future World can with purple trim has been phased out of use - though some appearances may still be made occasionally as Epcot's transformation progresses.
Other notable events observed in 2022 included MagicalTrash.com surpassing 900 trash can photos and launching a presence on Mastodon as the future of Twitter is somewhat cloudy. Here at Magical Trash we celebrated our 13-year anniversary on the trash can beat, applauded the introduction of a classy new Christmas ornament, showcased fascinating trash can running costumes, discovered a dumpster with a familiar "D" logo, and continued to cover the release of new salt shakers during Epcot's Food & Wine and Flower & Garden festivals. Thanks to everyone who contributed photos, visited MagicalTrash.com, and interacted with this weird hobby over the past year. You've put a smile on my face as we all follow this goofy passion. As it's impossible to be omnipresent at 12 theme parks and numerous resorts around the world, let us know what we've missed! Thanks for an interesting year, CanFans! - Steve Tanner, your Magical Trash host [All photos used by permission.]

Hello everyone! Oops, just realized the last post was last year. Sorry about that...
Well... since Halloween is tomorrow, I wanted to celebrate by sharing these renders with you guys. They are meant to be the DCA version of the Hollyood Tower Hotel, but since that has been replaced by GOTG: Mission Breakout, let’s just say it’s from the Paris ToT, shall we?
Modelled in Maya and rendered in Keyshot
Hope you like them!

What do you think are the golden era of the parks? Like when do you think MK was at its prime, DAK, ect...
Hey Anon! Thanks for the really interesting ask!
I guess the best way to answer is to go through park by park. I’ll definitely be letting my personal biases show a bit on this, but I’ll also try to back up my answers as best I can.
Disneyland (CA): For me personally, this one is going to be summer of 1995. Indiana Jones Adventure has just opened, Fantasmic is just a few years old, classics like the Peoplemover and Country Bears are still around, crowds are relatively small compared to today, and no fastpass shenanigans to worry about. If I had a time machine I’d visit around then. 50th and 60th anniversaries were also really good times, as there were great extras being provided and no Genie+ or COVID protocols to worry about.
California Adventure: This one is easily the 2010s post Buena Vista Street/Cars Land refurb. I think this is when the theme of the park was at its most cohesive and the atmosphere finally clicked. This is also the version of the park I’m most familiar with.
Magic Kingdom: Early 90s, as you’d still have a lot of the classics like Mr. Toad, Snow White’s Scary Adventures, and Twenty Thousand Leagues that have since been torn down. The rest of the park really hasn’t changed that much, but I guess you could push it to late 90s if you wanted to include Alien Encounter in the golden age. This was pre-fastpass, and you also had some really crazy parades that just don’t happen like they do now.
Epcot: The classic Epcot line up really peaked late 80s/early 90s, when you still had all the classic dark rides (including Horizons and OG Journey Into Imagination) and strong entertainment offerings. There’s been significant investment in the park lately, which is appreciated, but while the new stuff may be more exciting than some of the older attractions, it just doesn’t give off that irreplaceable Epcot vibe.
Hollywood Studios: I think late 90s/early 2000s we’re the best era of this park, as you still had Great Movie Ride, the tram tour, and the animation tour where you could actually see different movies being worked on. I think the park was at its most cohesive then, at least thematically (and was really fun!), and you also still had the Osbourne Family Spectacle of Lights. Entertainment offerings were also in full swing and weren’t quite as dated as they are now. All of the attractions added in recent years have been strong, but the park feels a bit off now (thematically and otherwise), which isn’t helped by the large dead patches of unused space.
Animal Kingdom: Post-Pandora, pre-COVID, this park was absolutely fantastic, and is still really strong now. The later hours and the evening activities added a lot to the park, and the lack of Genie+ is never a bad thing.
I’m gonna go ahead and round this out with the overseas parks as well:
Disneyland Paris: The park remains largely similar to when it opened, but I would have to say the golden age would be any time pre-Hyperspace Mountain, as Paris’ Space Mountain was incredibly unique and had great theming that the Star Wars overlay renders superfluous. You’d also have to go back to pre-paid fastpass era to truly reach this park’s golden age.
Walt Disney Studios Paris: Honestly this park has never really reached its potential, but I guess I would say post-Ratatouille to now? It has more to do than it has before but it still doesn’t seem particularly cohesive. Bonus points for the recent Tower of Terror additions, though. Those seem cool.
Tokyo Disneyland: Pre-COVID, I would say this park was as good as its ever been. The always impeccable upkeep done in Tokyo means any time would be a great time, though I’ll give a special mention to the early 2000s just because it had Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour.
Tokyo Disney Sea: Same as Tokyo Disneyland, most of the park’s existence has been a golden age. Anything from the addition of Tower of Terror up til the addition of Finding Nemo is essentially perfect, and even then that’s just a personal preference. I think with the coming addition of Fantasy Springs it’ll keep going strong - I just hope free fastpass returns eventually.
Hong Kong Disneyland: Mid-2010s, post-Mystic Manor, but pre-new castle and Ant-Man attraction, which was a serious downgrade to the existing Buzz ride. To get really specific, I’d say any Halloween season as they had great overlays and unique haunted mazes that have since changed.
Shanghai Disneyland: First 2-3 years from opening. During that time all of the theming was flawless and there were minimal IP-takeovers of non-IP related lands (Adventure Isle, etc). All ride effects were top notch and there was a great amount of streetmosphere and entertainment. I’m not exactly sure what it’s like now, but it sounds like COVID has been rough on the park. It will be interesting to see what it’s like post-Zootopia though.

Kim always loves teasing Ron satirically about his constant clumsiness😜, this canon quick n’ short comic was released in a newsstand or the local magazine section of your local grocery store/ Walmart, whatever. “Ron’s Greatest Hits!” was released on July 1, 2004!. “Disney Adventures: Comic Zone” was a replacement to the annual “Disney Adventures: Super Comic Special” in 2002 and 2003, and instead this magazine was released only quarterly 4x a year, this would have been the very first issue #1, it had a total of 14 issues with it’s last one in December 2007.

Not sure if I’ve said this before, but one thing I really appreciate about the DCA and Paris Tower of Terror’s lobby designs is that, unlike Florida, they don’t directly lift a major element 1 to 1 from a real hotel (Florida’s lobby, especially the ceiling, is the Millennium Biltmore’s). Instead, they heavily borrow from the general design look of era-appropriate Californian luxury hotels. Rather than looking like one historic hotel, they look like ALL of them.

The ride missing in ALL the Toy story's themed areas:
A emotional toy story dark ride.
Something in the style of Peter pan's flight classic dark ride with animatronics.

Toy story is not only a franchise about fun toys it brings a lot of emotion in all of it's films for both childrens and adults. But the latter is missing in all of Disney's parks toy story themed areas.
In the dark ride, we could revisite the most iconic moments and follow woody's journey with Andy We would basically follow a toy's life with owner using woody as the example the first scene could be woody being made. Also we also could visit 1 special moment we never saw. The moment Andy receive Woody and wrote his name on one of his boots too young to write the N in the right direction. Would be a way of showing us a touching moment we never saw before. We would end with the moment Andy let Woody go because he will not play with him anymore but is clear they still love each other.

New trash cans at Disneyland Paris' implementation of the Avengers Campus look to be pretty... boring. Silver cans with decals on a few sides - all of which don't really suggest any sort of Marvel-ish theme. I guess we'll see when the land opens in July 2022. // Disneyland Paris Resort, Walt Disney Studios, Avengers Campus, 2022 [Source: DLP Report. Used by Permission.]
